Guy B. Roberts, a former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense from the United States, was invited as a special guest by the MASA Strategy Center to Ankara. He gave two separate conferences at Ankara Bilim University, one for students and the other for academics.
During his presentations, Roberts discussed recent developments in nuclear technology, NATO’s global role, and the Israel-Hamas conflict that is also of interest in Turkey.
Guy B. Roberts, who teaches at the McDill Air Force Base Joint Special Operations University, also shared important insights on foreign relations, international organizations, bilateral and multilateral negotiations, and international law.
In the conference organized in cooperation with the MASA Strategy Center and Ankara Bilim University, Roberts expressed the view that Israel should be recognized by the Palestinian Authority, Hamas, and Hezbollah. He stated that negotiations could take place in this manner and answered questions from students sincerely.
Roberts also recommended Turkey as a guarantor country for ending the Hamas-Israel conflict. He said the following about this:
“I think it would be a very suitable role for Turkey. Turkey is one of our most important NATO allies. The reason it’s important is that it serves as a bridge between the Middle East and Europe and holds a significant position in the region. By taking on this role, I believe they will prove and demonstrate that they are an important leader in the region. I think it would be an excellent solution. You know, there were the Oslo Accords. One might ask what Norway had to do with what was going on. But Turkey plays a crucial role and has a significant stake in something like this happening.”
Guy B. Roberts met with university students and academics all day and flew back to the United States from Esenboğa this morning.
“Savaşların sona ermesinin bir yolu var!”
MASA Strateji Merkezi’nin özel davetlisi olarak Ankara’ya gelen ABD Eski Savunma Bakan Yardımcısı Guy B. Roberts Ankara Bilim Üniversitesi’nde öğrenci ve akademisyenlere yönelik iki ayrı konferans verdi.
Roberts, nükleer teknolojideki son gelişmeleri, NATO’nun dünyadaki rolü ve Türkiye’de de gündemi meşgul eden İsrail – Hamas çatışmasına değindi.
McDill Hava Üssü Ortak Özel Harekât Üniversitesi’nde dersler veren Guy B. Roberts dış ilişkiler, uluslararası kuruluşlar, stratejik konularda ikili ve çok taraflı müzakereler ile uluslararası hukuk alanında önemli bilgiler de paylaştı.
MASA Strateji Merkezi ve Ankara Bilim Üniversitesi’nin işbirliğiyle düzenlenen konferansta Roberts, İsrail’in Filistin Hükümeti, Hamas ve Hizbullah tarafından tanınması gerektiğini ifade etti. ‘Ancak bu şekilde masaya oturulabileceğini’ belirten Roberts, öğrencilerden gelen sorulara da içtenlikle yanıt verdi.
“Türkiye garantör olmak için en uygun ülke”
Guy B. Roberts Hamas – İsrail çatışmasının sona ermesi için garantör ülke olarak da Türkiye’yi önerdi. Roberts konu hakkında şunları söyledi:
“..Bunun Türkiye için çok uygun bir rol olacağını düşünüyorum. Türkiye bizim en önemli NATO müttefiklerimizden biridir. Önemli olmasının nedeni ise Ortadoğu ile Avrupa arasında bir köprü olmasıdır. Ve bölgede önemli bir yere sahip. Ancak bu rolü üstlenerek bölgede önemli bir lider olduklarını ispatlayacaklarını ve göstereceklerini düşünüyorum. Mükemmel bir çözüm olacağını düşünüyorum. Biliyorsunuz Oslo Anlaşmaları vardı. Birisi Norveç’in olup bitenlerle ne ilgisi olduğunu sorabilir. Ancak Türkiye’nin önemli bir rolü var ve böyle bir şeyin gerçekleşmesinde önemli bir çıkarı var.”
Tüm gün Üniversite öğrencileri ve akademisyenlerle görüşmeler gerçekleştiren Guy B. Roberts bu sabah Esenboğa’dan ABD’ye uçtu.
